Why Miniature Herefords?

Many of you are wondering why the heck my family has Miniature Herefords. Well, I’m here to tell you! I’m by no means an expert so I’m going give you a website for you to check out if you’re interested in the history and other fun facts! http://www.thecattlesite.com/breeds/beef/114/miniature-hereford/overview

For those you just wondering why people have them, I can tell you why I have them and why others have them. I don’t have research to back this up, I just have the voice of other breeders to tell you.

My dad and I like the Miniature Herefords because they go back to the genetics in ’50s and ’60s when my grandfather had Herefords. My grandfather died when I was 7 and I never had the chance to farm with him. This was my way of having a little bit of grandpa with me. I only have 4 cows and they require little pasture (pasture is just an area of luscious grass for the cows to graze on). They are my little reminder of grandpa and my daily reminder that life is always changing. I just mainly have them for a hobby.

Did you know that a Miniature Hereford ribeye is not that small. It is only about 1/4 smaller than a regular Hereford ribeye.

We also raise them because they are ready for market faster. When they are ready for market faster it means less grass and corn we have to put in them. Since they are smaller, they fill out faster. Makes it nice for when we need some beef earlier in the year.

Some people raise them for pets, love the original genetics, very domestic animals, for fun, take up less space than regular sized cattle, enjoy the companionship, or (like me) they think they are just so darn cute!
