30 Songs about Raising Cattle-Song 18

The Pretenders-Pack It Up

The 18th song about raising cattle is supposed to represent moving cattle to different places. Once a year cows (know that this isn’t on all farms, this happens on my farm and many others though) are moved to a different pasture. They are split up into groups and taken to different areas. We do this so that the cows have enough to eat throughout the summer and we can save our hay for the winter when we don’t have any grass. They are sorted, depending on their age and temperament, and moved. The cows that go to a certain pasture will go to that same pasture the next year. (The cows are brought all to the same place in the fall so we can supplement their food.) Cows remember where they have been and enjoy going to their ‘summer vacation home’.
