Part 1: Westwind Farm — My Beef Farm

This is probably one of my favorite topics in the industry. My farm. My cattle. I don’t care if that sounds terrible because it’s the truth and I don’t believe that it’s wrong to love your farm more than others.

My farm isn’t huge. It doesn’t need to be. No matter how many cattle you raise you’re still feeding the world great meat products. At least that’s how I see it.

We have around 4o cows right now. It’s only my dad and I running the farm. Since I work a full time job, it’s mainly my dad during the day so we like to keep it at a number that we can both handle with our schedules.

We raise Shorthorns, Herefords, and Miniature Herefords.

The Shorthorns are my dad’s thing, the Herefords are my thing, and the Miniature Herefords are kind of a hobby for my dad and I together. We love all kinds.

We are a cow/calf operation, start to finish. This means that we raise the cows that have the calves. We keep the calves until they are weaned and put into a yard. Then in the yard they are taken care of and fed until they are fat enough to go to market.

We sell our cattle when they are around 1,300 lbs. This is about our average weight for selling.

*BRAG POINT* We had the #1 carcass at the Iowa State Fair in the carcass show. Out of 100 other animals. We were pretty proud!

Cattle have been a part of my families life for 3 generations. It’s something we are proud of and love doing. Throughout the generations we have had Angus, Charolais, Herefords, and Shorthorns. We aren’t color blind when it comes to our cattle. What is your favorite breed? Do you have one?

My cows are registered with the Iowa Shorthorn Association and the American Hereford Association. Since they are registered, they have names. Unfortunately, with registrations, they all have the same name. I have a line of Gypsy’s, Hershey’s, Joey’s, Cinderella’s, and Ruby’s. There could be a total of 5 Hershey’s running around the farm, but I know them all by their color and/or face. The cows are my lifestyle and a part of my family. They bring me an income every year and I am thankful to have them in my life. Do your animals have registered names?

Is there anything you want to know about my farm? Is there anything you’re curious about or don’t know? Ask me, I’d love to tell you all about my cows!
